Thots on Champions League Final

In the pouring rain in Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Manchester United lifted their third European Title beating fellow English rivals Chelsea in an entertaining and tense match, the only sour point being the sending off of Didier Drogba which could probably be his last game in a Chelsea shirt.

The game lived up to its pre-billing as a contest between two European heavy weights. Man Utd started promisingly in the first half with Ronaldo creating chances on the left flank an area where Chelsea are the most deficient and no wonder they have splashed $16m on Jose Boswinga to fill in the problematic right back position. The greater threat from Man Utd came from this flank. Ronaldo added to his tally of goals this season by opening the score in the 26th minute of the match and deservedly so but the never say die attitude of Chelsea saw them getting a goal back by Frank Lampard just before the break.

If Man Utd dominated the first half and could have easily gone three goals up, Chelsea will be blaming their luck for not killing off the game in the second half which they dominated. Extra time saw tired legs with players from each side developing cramps.

Penalties has never been one of my favourites way of deciding a winner and in a night in which the best performer for Man Utd lost his kick, the best performer for Chelsea, John Terry slipped at the last moment of his kick which subsequently gave the cup to Man Utd.

Well done Man Utd though it would be appropriate to say it wasnt that they were better team on the night but just the luckier. Chelsea can pick themself up from this defeat and go on to achieve what just eluded them last night by becoming champions next season.
